How to choose bicycle for a child?

Choosing a children's bicycle is an important and responsible process, because the child's safety and riding comfort depend on it. There are several factors to consider when choosing a bicycle, including the child's age, height, ability, and the environment and conditions in which the bicycle is intended to be used.

Proper bike size is one of the most important factors to consider. If the bike is too big, it will be more difficult for the child to handle and steer it. On the other hand, if the bicycle is too small, it will not be comfortable for the child to ride it.

The size of a children's bicycle is indicated by the wheel size in inches, however, the actual dimensions can vary significantly between bicycle models and manufacturers. Indicative dimensions of children's bicycles according to the dimensions of the bicycle wheel:

12” and 16” bikes are usually equipped with support wheels. The support wheels are gradually raised, thus the child acquires the necessary sense of balance for riding a bicycle. After mastering the balance skills, the support wheels are removed.

Balance bike wheel size is 10” or 12”. In some cases, after long-term use of a balance bike, it may take longer for a child to adapt to a traditional pedal bike.

A bike that is too big will be more difficult to control and move around the house, it will be more difficult to start and finish a trip, and it will have a larger turning radius. Bicycle handles, handlebar diameter, handlebar width, crank length, gear ratios, brake and shifter levers are adapted to a specific age and height of children. The child's reaction time and all the maneuvers will take more time and space, which is not the best solution from the safety point of view.

A properly adjusted bicycle seat level is one where the child's leg is slightly bent at the lowest pedal position. For children who have just learned to keep their balance and are used to the support wheels, it is recommended to lower the seat a little so that the child can reach the ground with his feet when sitting on the seat. This will make it easier to start and finish the trip.

If you plan to ride on asphalt, you can choose a light bike with narrow tires that are suitable for asphalt surfaces. If the child also plans to ride through the forest or rough roads, it is recommended to choose a bicycle with a shock absorber and tires that are suitable for rough road surfaces.

The main mistakes parents make when buying a children's bike:

  • the size of the bicycle does not correspond to the height of the child. A bike that is too big makes it difficult to control the bike, but a bike that is too small significantly reduces the stability and comfort of the ride;
  • the bicycle is not equipped according to the age of the child. For example, the bike is equipped with standard brake and shift levers, which increases the child's reaction time in emergency situations.

Remember, together with the bicycle, the child must also buy a helmet and use it even on the shortest trips, because it is the child's "safety belt" that will protect him from serious injuries. Also recommended are padded gloves, which will reduce hand abrasion, and a red flashing daytime running light, which will significantly increase the child's visibility in public places.

Some tips that can help teach your child to ride the new bike:

  • show the child how to do, not just tell. It is easier for a child to learn by watching others do it;
  • make sure the child is safe. Choose a suitable place to teach your child to drive and provide him with safety features such as knee and elbow protectors;
  • be patient and supportive. Every child learns at his own pace, so don't worry if your child doesn't go so smoothly at first.

Children's bicycles are designed for a height range of 15-20 cm at a certain age, which means that the purchased bicycle will only fit a child for 1-2 seasons. Don't worry if you don't have a brother or sister, relative or friend to give a bike that has become too small.
